Bitwarden review
Value-seekers, open-source advocates and self-hosters.
Overview
Bitwarden is open source, independently audited, and astonishingly cheap: the free tier covers unlimited passwords across unlimited devices, and Premium — with TOTP, emergency access and reports — costs about ten dollars a year. Power users can even self-host. The compromises are ergonomic rather than cryptographic: the interface is functional rather than delightful, autofill occasionally needs coaxing, and family/business polish trails 1Password. On pure security-per-dollar, nothing else comes close.
Strengths and weaknesses
What we like
- Fully open source with published third-party audits
- Genuinely excellent free tier — no device limits
- Premium is ~$10/year, an order of magnitude under rivals
- Self-hosting option for maximal control
- XChaCha20 option and strong encryption credentials
What to watch
- Interface functional, not polished
- Autofill edge cases need manual help more often
- Sharing and admin UX trails 1Password
- Some features (emergency access) paywalled in Premium

Who Bitwarden is for — and who should skip it
Best for
Individuals on a budget, technical users, families wanting cheap shared vaults, and organisations that want auditability or self-hosting.
Probably not for
Non-technical family members who need maximum hand-holding, and businesses wanting the deepest admin tooling.
Our verdict — 8.8/10
Bitwarden is the value champion and the transparency champion in one: the default recommendation for anyone who balks at subscription prices — and shockingly close to first place overall.
Bitwarden, head to head
1Password vs Bitwarden
1Password buys refinement; Bitwarden buys transparency and thrift.
Bitwarden vs NordPass
Bitwarden wins the value fight on merit; NordPass wins it only inside the Nord bundle.
