Jira review
Software teams running agile delivery at any scale.
Overview
Jira is the default for a reason: sprints, backlogs, boards, releases and developer-tool integrations (Bitbucket, GitHub, CI/CD) form the most complete agile delivery system available, battle-tested from startups to banks. The same power makes it the wrong tool for almost everyone else — its concepts, configuration surface and interface density assume engineering fluency, and administration is a role, not a task. Atlassian's push from Data Center to Cloud also demands migration planning for larger estates. For software teams, it remains the standard; beyond them, look elsewhere first.
Strengths and weaknesses
What we like
- The agile standard: sprints, epics, backlogs done properly
- Deepest developer toolchain integrations
- Workflow engine handles genuinely complex processes
- Scales to tens of thousands of users
- Huge marketplace and consultant ecosystem
What to watch
- Overwhelming for non-technical teams
- Real administrative overhead
- Interface density and occasional sluggishness
- Cloud migration pressure for Data Center estates

Who Jira is for — and who should skip it
Best for
Software engineering organisations, and IT teams running structured delivery.
Probably not for
Marketing, ops and general business teams — they will bounce off; choose Asana, monday or Notion instead.
Our verdict — 8.3/10
Jira stays the professional standard for agile software delivery — unmatched in its lane, and emphatically not for anyone outside it.
